Governor Announces State-of-the-Art, Web-Based System that Electronically Connects the Unemployed with Potential Job Openings

Governor David A. Paterson today announced a revolutionary E-Government tool that will help nearly 875,000 unemployed New Yorkers receive job leads in their regions immediately. The Department of Labor's ground-breaking, web-based Skills Matching and Referral Technology (SMART) 2010 program analyzes resumes for skills and work experience, then electronically contacts unemployed New Yorkers via e-mail, recommending job openings in their areas to them based on their past work history, experience and skills. Every unemployed New Yorker is encouraged to visit their nearest One-Stop Career Center to get immediate help in crafting a resume. Once a resume is completed in an electronic format, a Labor Department counselor will feed the resume into the SMART 2010 system. Within 24 hours of submitting a resume, the individual will receive an e-mail containing 1 to 10 job matches from the Department of Labor’s database of employment opportunities. Job openings will be within a specific geographic radius, depending on the region. These e-mails will continue every day thereafter. Customers without an individual e-mail account or computer skills are encouraged to receive assistance from the Department of Labor staff.

Incredible Interviews Made Easy

On Wednesday October 28th the Brentwood Public Library will hold a workshop called Incredible Interviews Made Easy from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. This workshop will address some ways that you can prepare for your interview, how to present yourself, how to handle some of the tough interview questions and various do's and don'ts of interview etiquette. Marilyn Leibowitz, a retired executive, has successfully coached others in developing their interview skills so as to land the job they wanted. Filing: From Wednesday, September 2, 2009 through Friday, January 29, 2010.

Exam Date: Saturday, March 13, 2010, or alternately on Friday evening, March 12, 2010, Thursday evening, March 18, 2010, or Sunday morning and/or afternoon, March 21, 2010.

The Huntington Public Library will offer a Resume Writing & Email class on Saturday, November 7th from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at our Huntington Station Branch. In this hands-on class you will learn to use your computer to style and format a powerful resume that will stand out above the rest. Attaching resume file to e-mail will also be addressed. Registration begins on November 2nd.
