Cell Phone Scam Targets Unemployment Insurance Recipients

Scammers using cell phone calls and text messages are targeting unemployment insurance recipients in order to steal the unsuspecting victim’s benefits. People statewide, including those not receiving unemployment insurance benefits, have received text or cell phone messages that say something like “The Department of Labor has limited or deactivated your benefit card starting with (first 4-6 digits of card). Call: (various phone numbers) to reactivate.” If they call the number, they are asked for their full card number and PIN. Once the scammer has that information, the victim’s account can be accessed and funds stolen. Most, if not all, the scam messages have been received on the Sprint network. The NYS Department of Labor is working with Chase, the bank that issues debit cards that unemployment recipients use to receive benefits, to address the situation. If you get a call or text message advising you that the Labor Department has limited or deactivated your credit card, DO NOT call the number provided. Neither the Department of Labor or Chase will ever call and ask you for your debit card account information. If you receive one of these messages, don’t respond: DELETE IT. If you have already replied and have given out your debit card PIN , call the customer service phone number on the back of your debit card for help. The Department of Labor is working with Chase to have stolen money restored to victims’ accounts. For more information, check the Department of Labor’s website at http://www.labor.ny.gov/.

New York State Department Of Labor's Shared Work Program

Governor Paterson announced today that the Department of Labor’s Shared Work program saved more than 10,500 jobs statewide in the first eight months of this year, attracting more than 1,800 companies to participate – more than three times the number of companies that took part in Shared Work in all of 2008. Shared Work gives employers an alternative to layoffs. Rather than lay off a percentage of workers to cut costs, an employer can reduce hours of all or a particular group of employees. Those employees can use the program to collect unemployment insurance benefits to make up for the lost wages. The Shared Work program allows employees to retain their health insurance, retirement, vacation pay or other fringe benefits. The benefit for a participating company is they keep the skilled and trained worker during the economic downturn. When business picks up, the employer does not have to find new workers and train them. For information on eligibility & how to apply please visit the New York State Department Of Labor website.

Governor Announces State-of-the-Art, Web-Based System that Electronically Connects the Unemployed with Potential Job Openings

Governor David A. Paterson today announced a revolutionary E-Government tool that will help nearly 875,000 unemployed New Yorkers receive job leads in their regions immediately. The Department of Labor's ground-breaking, web-based Skills Matching and Referral Technology (SMART) 2010 program analyzes resumes for skills and work experience, then electronically contacts unemployed New Yorkers via e-mail, recommending job openings in their areas to them based on their past work history, experience and skills. Every unemployed New Yorker is encouraged to visit their nearest One-Stop Career Center to get immediate help in crafting a resume. Once a resume is completed in an electronic format, a Labor Department counselor will feed the resume into the SMART 2010 system. Within 24 hours of submitting a resume, the individual will receive an e-mail containing 1 to 10 job matches from the Department of Labor’s database of employment opportunities. Job openings will be within a specific geographic radius, depending on the region. These e-mails will continue every day thereafter. Customers without an individual e-mail account or computer skills are encouraged to receive assistance from the Department of Labor staff.
