"Gas Card" Program For Job Seekers Expanded Statewide

Additional transportation assistance for unemployed workers will be made available by the New York State Department of Labor in 20 non-rural counties in New York State, including Suffolk County. Each Workforce Investment Board in these counties will receive $6,250 that may be used to help pay transportation expenses for unemployed workers to access services at One-Stop Career Centers, apply for jobs, attend interviews and receive training. Unemployed workers in these counties should contact their local One-Stop Career Center for additional information and specific eligibility requirements. In general, recipients must be unemployed, actively looking for work, and registered with their local One-Stop Career Center to receive transportation assistance under this program.

CAREER READINESS TRAINING PROGRAM

The Suffolk County Department of Labor's Displaced Homemaker Resource Center is offering a free Career Training Program for persons re-entering the workplace after years of working in the home. The program covers a variety of topics such as assertiveness, self-esteem, resume writing & interview skills. The program begins Monday, May 4th and continues through May 21st. It will be held at the Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center & classes will run from 9:30AM -1:00PM. Registration is required and will be held April 29th & April 30th at 10:00AM at the Suffolk County One-Stop Employment Center. Program Helps Jobless Professionals Get Back On Track

Stony Brook University now offers a new program that prepares unemployed professionals for project management or business analysis certifications, provides job-search support and even introduces them to employers. Pat Malone, the program's director says "the Professional Group Program funded by Long Island's three Workforce Investment Boards, run by state and county labor departments, is a way to help professionals navigate this crisis in the economy and job market". Stimulus Job Watch

With the passing of the Stimulus Plan in February, new job and career opportunities are being created and expected to open up nationwide. The Stimulus plan promises to create or save over 3 million jobs. Many people are wondering where these jobs will show up, and how they can land one.
